About Us

Blackheath Dyslexia is run by a small team of dyslexia specialist teachers, each with a Post-graduate, Level 7 Diploma in Dyslexia, an Assessment Practising Certificate (APC) and are members of the Professional Association of Teachers of Students with Specific Learning Difficulties (PATOSS). Each teacher also has an enhanced DBS check.

Cheryl Young (Co-founder & Director) BA(Hons), Cert Ed, PGDip, AMBDA, APC, MDG.

An artist and former art lecturer, Cheryl’s interest in dyslexia was ignited when she was leading an Art Foundation course. Fuelled by her curiosity and interest in dyslexia and creativity, Cheryl embarked on her postgraduate studies, and hence, her pathway to becoming a specialist teacher was set. Cheryl’s creative background is key to her success ;  she encourages her students to explore their individual learning styles and develop strategies to help them become independent and confident learners.

Cheryl is also a highly-experienced dyslexia assessor, adept at putting clients at ease during the assessment. Her reliability, efficiency and effectiveness are greatly valued by the education providers that she consults with.

Cheryl engages clients with her passion, enthusiasm and sense of fun – her singing, musical theatre and opera talents often find their way into her tutorials, much to the delight and amusement of her students.

Andy Liddicoat (Co-founder) BA(Hons), PG Dip, CCET, QTLS, APC

Andy has forged a career providing support for those with special educational needs (SEN) that include dyslexia and go far beyond. He has worked with students from primary through to college level. Within Blackheath Dyslexia he provides specialist support for those facing obstacles in maths and linguistics.

Proudly dyslexic himself, Andy knows first-hand both about the difficulty of navigating the education system and the satisfaction of succeeding in it. Burdened with degrees in Fine Art and Philosophy, Andy’s humour, love of bass guitar and fascination with Star Trek provide ready access points for certain recalcitrant clients. Then there are his magic tricks…

Jess Jasper (Specialist Teacher/Assessor) BSC(Hons), PG Cert, QTLS, PG Dip, MDG, APC.

Originally a geology graduate, Jess realised her calling for supporting SEN learners in 2007 whilst working as a learning support assistant in a secondary school. To widen her practice and experience, she moved into post-16 education where she met and became inspired by Cheryl; mutual respect and a firm friendship followed.

Jess has a real strength in re-engaging learners, particularly those with low self-esteem. Combining her vivid imagination, interests in Lego and video games with a sense of humour and an infectious smile, Jess puts the learner at the centre of her practice to great effect.
